Kate Winslet moves back to Britain to live with her Rocknroll lover
Kate Winslet, the Oscar-winning actress, speaks for the first time about her relationship with Ned Rocknroll, the nephew of Sir Richard Branson.
A year after Mandrake disclosed that Kate Winslet’s boyfriend, Ned Rocknroll,
had been granted a divorce from his heiress wife, the nephew of Sir Richard
Branson has moved in with the Oscar-winning film star.
In her first public comment about her relationship with the former husband of
Eliza Pearson, Winslet tells me that she has returned from America
permanently, to make a home with Rocknroll.
“I can confirm that Kate has moved back to the UK and that she and Ned
Rocknroll are now living together,” says her spokesman.
The Reading-born actress, who celebrates her 37th birthday next week, has
bought a 15th-century house in a hamlet in West Sussex for £2million with
Rocknroll. Her decision to comment publicly on their relationship is an
indication of its seriousness.
Two years ago, her lawyer announced that she had separated from Sam Mendes,
the Oscar-winning director of American Beauty. The couple had been
married for seven years and had a son, Joe, who is now aged eight. In
August, Winslet put the New York penthouse that she bought with Mendes up
for rent for £18,500 a month.
The actress, who won the Best Actress Oscar in 2009 for her performance as a
former Nazi concentration camp guard in The Reader, was previously
married to Jim Threapleton, a film director, by whom she had a daughter,
Mia, who turns 12 next month. They divorced in 2001 after three years.
Rocknroll, 34, who works for his uncle’s space venture Virgin Galactic, changed his surname from Abel Smith by deed poll before he married Pearson, the eldest daughter of Viscount Cowdray, in an open-air pagan ceremony led by a druid in September 2009.
The lavish wedding took place at her family’s 17,000-acre Cowdray Park estate in West Sussex. Princess Beatrice, the daughter of the Duke of York, was among the guests.
However, the couple separated after just 20 months. “I broke up with Ned,” Pearson told Mandrake last October. The heiress, 24, whose family wealth is estimated at £500 million, added: “I won’t disclose the reason, but the split was very amicable. We’re still the best of friends.”
Winslet, who was the youngest person to accrue six Academy Award nominations, has spoken publicly only once about her divorce from Mendes. “One thing I will say about me and Sam is that it’s fine, it’s really fine,” she said last year. “We’re grown-ups at the end of the day and, however hard it’s been for me, it’s been equally hard for him.”
