In celebration of The Dressmaker's DVD and digital release, ELLE had the opportunity to have a chat with the woman behind the magic of the film, Margot Wilson, who designed the fabulous costumes you saw Winslet swanning around in pseudo-1950s outback Australia.

Tell us a bit about working with Kate Winslet…

Working with Kate was a wonderful opportunity. It was a treat to have one character to concentrate on. She is extremely professional, funny, very down to earth, and a pleasure to work with.

How collaborative was Kate?

Kate had taken sewing lessons before she came to Australia to work on The Dressmaker so she had a sense of the sewing terminologies and she understands what works on her and what doesn’t. We talked about Tilly and I presented drawing to her to show her want I was thinking. I was lucky enough to have already worked on a film Triple 9 in Atlanta, Georgia with Kate earlier that year so I already knew how to approach her designs.            

You read the script, you hear Kate has signed on for the lead part - what’s the first thing you do? 

As with any film you begin with research, thinking about who your canvas is by looking at photos of them, looking at other films they have worked on. Once you have read the script a number of times you work on your script breakdowns, which tells you how many costumes you need for each character and what they are doing in the scene. If they have action in a scene they may need multiples of the same costume. Then it’s about making the character and the actor fit together. Drawings are done and discussions with the director and early conversations with the actor if possible. Often they are on other films. Preparation is important.

How did Australian style weave into the costumes?

For Tilly it was important to keep her separate from the rest of the town. She hadn’t been back since she was much younger. Tilly had left travelling to France. She had worked in fashion over there perfecting her skills and talent. These are the skills that she brought back to the town as a couture dressmaker.

How do you think fashion has changed since the '50s?

Fashion has grown in leaps and bounds since the '50s; silhouettes have changed, physical appearance has changed. The way we dress now is a lot more casual. There aren’t the restrictions of foundation garments. Society isn’t as conservative as it once was about dressing.

The fabrics are also different. It was cheaper to make your own clothes in the '50s [than to buy them] but now it’s cheaper to buy a garment than to sit down and make it. People don’t sew as much any more, so clothes are becoming more generic than they used to be: the same garment is manufactured thousands of times over. Time is not spent on fitting the garment properly, which results in one-size-fits-all situations. Fashion isn’t as feminine, or as fitted and shapely now as it was in the '50s.

Gli abitanti di Le Touquet sono in fibrillazione: qualcuno ha avvistato Kate Winslet sulla spiaggia, sul set di uno shooting di moda. Pare sia arrivata in elicottero, per la gioia dei quotidiani locali che l’hanno subito strillato in prima pagina. "È vero, è un volo di 45 minuti da dove abito", conferma l’attrice inglese, oggi residente in una favolosa dimora sulle coste del Sussex. "La cosa divertente è che ho tentato di convincere Peter (Lindbergh, ndr) che la spiaggia davanti a casa mia era esattamente come quella della location in Normandia, ma non mi ha dato retta. Poi gli ho fatto vedere alcune foto e lui si è stupito: “Ma sono identiche?!”. Certo che lo sono, ho risposto, l’ho ripetuto dieci volte! È scoppiato a ridere e mi ha promesso che presto verrà a trovarmi per verificare di persona".

Kate conosce bene Lindbergh, e ama lavorare con lui. "Il nostro primo shooting risale a oltre 10 anni fa. Ma è sempre una sorpresa ritrovare la sua energia, il suo amore per il soggetto, la sua passione. Certo, ti fa sentire bella, ma credo che il suo vero genio sia la capacità di catturare la verità di una persona, senza artifici. Mi fido di lui istintivamente, perché so che non vuole trasformarmi in ciò che non sono". Nel servizio di queste pagine, potremmo dire che invece di trasformarla le ha permesso di realizzare in parte una sua fantasia di attrice: quella di interpretare un uomo. "Il merito va tutto a lui, è un’idea sua, che ho accettato con entusiasmo. Spesso i giornalisti mi chiedono quale ruolo sogno di interpretare, e io rispondo sistematicamente “quello di un uomo”. Per un’attrice è il challenge supremo, no? Mi sono davvero divertita a travestirmi, e a trovare in me un lato più mascolino, anche se qui stiamo parlando di un servizio con Peter, quindi maschile ma sexy: lui vuole sempre mostrare qualche centimetro di pelle in più...", le scappa una risata contagiosa.

The Dressmaker al Tff e dal 28 aprile nei cinema!!

'The Dressmaker', al Torino Film Festival (21 novembre) e al cinema dal 28 aprile 2016 distribuito da Eagle Pictures

The Dressmaker' sarà proiettato in anteprima nazionale durante il 33esimo Torino Film Festival, all’interno della sezione Festa mobile fuori concorso, sabato 21 novembre. Il film, presentato al Toronto Film Festival, vede protagonista il Premio Oscar Kate Winslet e sarà distribuito nelle sale italiane nel 2016, il prossimo 28 aprile, con Eagle Pictures.

Tratto dall’omonimo romanzo best-seller di Rosalie Ham, 'The Dressmaker' è ambientato interamente in Australia, nello stato di Victoria, nel 1950, ed è diretto dalla regista australiana Jocelyn Moorhouse. Il film è appena uscito in Australia con un successo di pubblico e critica senza precedenti e un incasso da record. Una pellicola tutta al femminile, dall’autrice del romanzo, alla regista, alla protagonista Premio Oscar che interpreta l’affascinante personaggio di Tilly, una giovane e bella donna che, dopo aver trascorso molti anni in Europa, torna nella sua piccola città natale.

Winslet worked exclusively with her own costume designer Margot Wilson to bring the fashion to life. "This is the first time I worked with someone brought on [just] to create the costumes for the character I was playing. It was very unique," she says. The coatdress Winslet wore above was designed to embody Tilly's couture education and design inspirations. It was modeled off the famous Dior 'new look' silhouette, the fashion house, along with Balenciaga, one of Tilly's biggest influences.

Having worked with costume designer Margot Wilson before on Triple 9, Winslet was overjoyed to collaborate once again. "She's got a really incredible eye. I just felt thrilled that her ideas really did match up with how I realised I imagined Tilly would look. That sense of incredible simplicity that ultimately made everything she wore look so effortless."

Kate Winslet sarà una sarta nel film australiano The Dressmaker

31/08/2013 Kate Winslet ha accettato di far parte del cast del film The Dressmaker (dal romanzo di Rosalie Ham), nel ruolo della protagonista Tilly Dunnage.
Interpreterà una sarta che dopo tanti anni torna nel suo paese d'origine, dopo che da piccola era stata accusata di omicidio. Vorrebbe far pace con l'eccentrica madre Molly, che avrà il volto di Judy Davis, ma prima dovrà rivelare i segreti del suo passato.
La regista, Jocelyn Moorhouse, descrive The Dressmaker come "Gli spietati con una macchina da cucire".
Il film sarà girato in Australia nel 2014.

Aggiornamento del 20/09/2013: il film doveva essere girato a inizio 2014 ma le riprese sono state spostate alla fine del 2014 data la gravidanza della Winslet.
